Westmalle - Dubbel

Westmalle Dubbel is a dark, reddish brown Trappist beer with secondary fermentation in the bottle (7% alcohol). The cream coloured head smells of special malt and leaves a nice lace pattern behind in the glass. The flavour is rich and complex, herby and fruity, with a fresh-bitter finale. It is a balanced quality beer with a soft feel in the mouth and a long, dry after taste.

Since 1856, the monks have brewed a darker Trappist beer in addition to their lunchtime beer. In 1926 they adapted the recipe and started brewing a somewhat heavier beer. That is the basis of the current Dubbel.

The 33 cl bottles are distributed individually, in folding packs of six or in crates of 24 bottles. But Westmalle Dubbel is also the only dark Trappist beer that is also available in 30 and 50 litre kegs. It is on the menu in around 300 carefully selected horeca outlets. As this living beer develops differently in the keg, the Dubbel from the keg has a different, rather sweeter flavour than a Dubbel from a bottle.
